Canary Wharf's East Wintergarden Cuts Energy Use through Smart Glass
Canary Wharf's Premier events venue, The East Wintergarden, has successfully cut its energy use through the implementation of 'smart glass' technology.
The installation on the north side of the impressive venue, completed in recent months, transforms the glass from transparent to opaque (and vice versa) in an instant.
The technology reduces heating requirements during the winter and allows less light into the building during the summer, while maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cesar Pelli designed building.
A recent study by the University of Cambridge found that smart glass reduced the temperature fluctuations in a room by around 6 degrees and could reduce 90% of a window's solar heat gain.
Joanne Taylor, Manager of the East Wintergarden says "The new smart glass brings environmental benefits and reduces costs. It also benefits our clients through enhanced privacy".
