Gok Wan launches new range for Sainsburys in home town
He's best known for helping women look good naked – but now Gok Wan is encouraging the nation's ladies to get their kit on.
The Leicester-born style guru came back to his home city yesterday to launch his womenswear range for Sainsbury's, Gok for TU.
Featuring 28 garments based around four main colours – red, teal, terracotta and black – Gok says his first collection is all about making women of all shapes, sizes and ages feel confident and stylish.
At the launch, at the Leicester Tigers ground, in Welford Road, the How To Look Good Naked presenter said he was "really excited" to release his first clothing collection.
He said: "It's been a lot of hard work which is great because I love that and it's really nice to see the end product.
"The collection is a homage to every single inquiry or complaint from the huge amount of women I have dealt with.
"Every woman is unique and I've collected all the questions so hopefully there's an answer.
"It's a huge achievement. I have never been a part of something like this and it's enormous for me to be working with a massive retail company – I'm still trying to get used to it."
Gok said the collection mixes everyday, easy-to-wear clothes with statement pieces.
"I think what the collection will do is entice shoppers who want to try a different colour or cut and get them to give it a go," he said.
"I'm not into the hard sale but it's about offering an option and I think we've covered all camps."
Gok spent the day training Sainsbury's staff, who will be selling the autumn collection in their stores.
"We've taken staff through slides of the collection, taking them through each garment and giving them as much knowledge as they need to know," he said.
The 37-year-old, who was brought up in Beaumont Leys, said it was nice to launch the range in his home city.
He said: "Leicester will always be my home. It's a bit different to my childhood memories because my parents have moved but it's nice to see them and have that familiarity."
About 200 Sainsbury's staff from across the country attended the launch.
Kelly Dawkins, clothing manager at Sainsbury's Fosse Park, said she was delighted to be among them.
She said: "My colleagues are very jealous that I'm here today.
"It's great Gok helped design the clothes and being from Leicester makes it much more personal."
The Gok for TU collection will be available in 200 Sainsbury's stores from Thursday, October 6.
